Flies are the summer offenders that enjoy feeding off substances such as sweat, blood, proud flesh, and faeces, making horses the prime targets! Flies can cause irritation, restlessness, and itching and can be the primary site for infection.
Did you know there are 4 common types of flies!
- House Fly – black/ grey body and red eyes. They are designed to have a liquid diet, which means that they feed on the residues around the horse’s eyes and nose, sweat and any cuts or wounds your horse may have.
- Stable Fly – like the house fly, except that they feed primarily on the blood of animals. They have sharp mouthpieces to penetrate the skin.
- Horse Fly – one of the largest flies that have an extremely painful bite. They are responsible for spreading infectious diseases, such as equine infectious anaemia and West Nile Virus.
- Midges – although tiny in structure, midges are responsible for causing Sweet Itch, a very frustrating issue among the equine community!
However, with the help of scientifically formulated fly repellents, the discomfort caused by flies can be relieved, as well as preventing the spread of disease.

Carr & Day & Martin have spent many years researching and developing the ultimate fly protection range for horses. They know horses’ skin is sensitive so you will find the following key ingredients throughout the range. Key ingredients which can be found in Carr & Day & Martin’s Fly Repellents:
- DEET – originally developed by the U.S. army in 1946 for use by military personnel in insect-infested areas. DEET forms a vapour barrier at the skin surface that deters mosquitoes and biting insects from landing on the skin.
- Citriodiol – a naturally sourced active ingredient. It is obtained from the Eucalyptus Citriodora tree. Proven to repel insects.
- Citronella – one of the essential oils obtained from the leaves and stems of different species of Cymbopogon, commonly known as Lemongrass.
- Cypermethrin – works by quickly affecting the insect’s centra nervous system, killing insects that eat or come into contact with.
Other Ingredients to look out for when choosing effective fly control are DEET, Citronella, Eucalyptus and Lemongrass.
